Flood!

Due to water leakage in my basement from recent downpours, it will be a few days before I update.

Why oh why? (or why this blog, why now, and what's it about?)

Why start this blog?

I'm a mid-life professional with a college degree. In one respect I've been very lucky - I've been with the same company for nearly 17 years! When's the last time you heard of that?

But now my company has started outsourcing technical types, right along the lines of my job description. Two were outsourced last week; one of them has been here longer than I have. Though they're getting a pretty good separation package, it's not going to be easy for them.

I'm a prime target, too. My experience makes my salary expensive. If they can get someone in who can do 75% as well as I do for 50% of the cost, they benefit.

Finding a new job at my salary range and age won't be easy, especially with the economy starting to turn around. Considering I just bought a house a year ago, and my wife isn't working now... well, the prospect of possibly having to take a cut in income isn't enticing, to say the least.

Sound familiar? I'm sure it's the same story as millions of other workers here in the United States.

So here I am. I hate - hate! the idea of having my future in someone else's hands. I have learned my lesson. So now I'm searching for something where my destiny is determined by what I do, not some corporate-level MBA who got his job through connections.

What are my options? Well, I have a year to 2 years, I estimate, to find a business. I have the experience and expertise to consult, but that's such feast or famine type work that I think I'd need supplemental income for a base, and use the consulting fees as investment money or savings. I'd love to work at home, but having looked for quite some time to find something for my wife, I know that 99% of the "work at home" opportunities out there are minimally profitable at best, and at worse, are outright scams.

That's where you, the reader, come in. I'll do my best to give you my critical analysis of different books, programs, websites, and "business opportunities", and I'll throw in my thoughts of different subjects related to trying to find a home business that's actually workable.

Your job is to set me straight when I am wrong, and to point me toward different resources for me to check out.
